Found it mentioned in a history of Mexico I'm starting: it's called a blue maguey, it's used to make tequila just as Martin Pagel said, and this is what it looks like: http://fotosa.ru/stock_photo/WorldPicture/p_260283.jpg. It grows all around here and I even saw it today in a nursery (called "vivero" in Spanish!) in San Miguel.
